More Car Break Ins

Be on the look out for criminals. There have been reports – Again – of cars being broken into in Lost Creek , Kinsac Rd., William Nelson Dr., Jamie Dr. etc. It happened this past Sunday. Sometime after the Superbowl.

To discourage these criminals; please consider the following:

Keep outdoor lights on at night.
Activate your home alarms - while your home and away.
Keep your cars locked or leave nothing in them of any value; not even your mailbox key or spare change!
Use your vehicle alarm if you have one.
Do not leave anything in your car that you would not want to lose.
Call the Mounties if you find someone breaking into your car or home. The number is 244.7208.
Speak to your neighbors about this and watch out for each other.

You can also report suspicious vehicles driving around the neighborhood. Usually these criminals scope out a place before they make their move. Do not hesitate to call the police if you see a vehicle driving slowly around or making several passes on the street.

Beaver Bank Kinsac Lions Club Hosting Friday Evening Meals.

The Lions Den in Beaver Bank has been hosting Friday Evening suppers for some time now. From what we hear its an excellent meal served by freindly faces and the price can’t be beat. Here is this week’s invitation from Lion Randy:

“This week’s menu will consist of French Fries and Fresh Vegetables…along with an a la carte menu. Of which some (but not all) are listed below.

Pan Fried Haddock, Butterfly Pork chops, Chicken Breast, Hot Turkey and many more . $6.00 We also encourage you to bring the kids. If children are wee tikes…smaller kid portions are available. Bring a friend or neighbor and sit and enjoy the friendly atmosphere of BBK Lions Den. I look forward to having a “Beaverage” with you.

Construction of the Playground Equipment Started December 13, 2011.

Here is what the playground equipment will look like. We’ve been told it should be going in thru November!!! Remember this is just one item that will make up the park. In addition to this there will be a graded landscaped open play area, walking trails, a couple of picnic tables and several benches. Also in the works is a covered picnic area whitch will be great for kids and parents to get some shade.

We will have to form a ‘Park Grand Opening’ committee thru the winter to plan for a family fun day at the park in the spring. That should be lots of fun for everyone.

We’ll put out a call for committee members after Christmas. Please consider helping out. If no one volunteers, its likely not going to happen.

The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board has ruled that HRM council is to be reduced from 23 to 16 councillors. This means the districts each councillor represents will be changed as well. There are 2 different scenarios being shown on HRM’s website. We would encourage everyone to take 10 or 15 minutes and look over these proposals and make your voice heard at a public meeting OR the Municipal Clerks office if you have any questions or concerns.

Summer Fundraiser Winners!!!

Two members of our executive held the draw for the summer fundraiser Wednesday Evening at Lost Creek Golf Course. The tickets were drawn by a staff member who did not have a ticket in the bin. The prize winners are listed below. Congrats to each of you and thank you to everyone who bougth a ticket to support or new park. We also want to give a big THANK YOU to the SPONSORS listed below who put up these great prizes.

1st prize includes green fees for four people and 2 power cars for 18 holes at Lost Creek Golf Course. WINNER – Susan Leslie from Dartmouth.

2nd prize is a Nikon Coolpix S3100 camera that includes a case, a memory card and a $100 gift card for Henry’s School of Imaging so that the winner can take a free camera class – WINNER – Lucie Kendell from Beaver Bank.

3rd prize is 1 night for two at the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton. Includes full buffet breakfast, internet and parking – WINNER -Victor Cobb from Beaver Bank.

Time to talk to your kids about ‘Baby Bears’

A Black Bear Cub was sighted in Lost Creek Village today in someone’s driveway on Crooked Stick. We don’t have an idea of the size and the Mother wasn’t seen so we don’t know if this is a juvenile just starting out on their own or perhaps the Mother was nearby. (The photo below is just an example)

Its exciting to see a large predator around our area. Nonetheless, it might be a good idea to speak to your children and tell them to never approach a bear cub, no matter how cute they might be. Mommy bear might feel threatened or fear her cub is in danger. The results could be very bad.

Kids should tell Mom or Dad or the closest adult that there is a bear nearby.

Park Update – We’re Closer Than Ever!!!

We have some exciting developments lately that eveyone should know about. We are so close to making the park a reality this summer or fall; thanks to the help of lots of different people within HRM, other community groups, local organizations and volunteers within our own group.

We’re excited and happy to announce that with the help of Councillor Barry Dalrymple and a few other folks at HRM, our park has been included and approved in this year’s capital budget for HRM for the amount of $50,000.

Further to this, we’ve recieved several thousand dollars from the Councillor over the last couple of years. Last fall we had a donation from the developers of Lost Creek Village (Larry Gumbley + family and Keith Barrett) in the amount of $2000.00.

Home Depot has also given us funding thru their Home Depot Canada Foundation for $5000.00.

So with the contributions above, and with our own association’s fundraisers; we have over $18,000.00 in the bank. This money is held at a local bank under the care and trust of the Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Awarness Awarness Association.

And as most of you are aware, our area rate was approved by council last November. This will enable HRM to ‘lend’ us an additional $50,000 to get the park built asap. This will be paid off over the next several years from our area rate (see post below for additioanl info on the area rate).

Just this past week, we learned we are going to be funded in the amount of $5,000.00 from the Cobequid Community Development Fund.

All we need is for one other big funding application to come thru. We have applied to the Province of Nova Scotia for $60,000 from the Recreation Facility Development (RFD) Program. Hopefully we’ll hear on this one soon and we’ll start to see some action in the next few months.

UPDATE – JUNE 7, 2011…More excellent news…HRM/Lost Creek Community Association approved for grant of $50,000.00 from the Government of Nova Scotia‘s Recreation Facility Development (RFD) Grant Program.

This round outs the funding for phase 1 of our park and its going to be great. We should see some development there this summer. Stay tuned for updates and info on an upcoming meeting of the association this summer.

Lightning Strikes Lost Creek

Everyone certainly heard the severe storm we had Wednesday, June 1, but did you hear that we had multiple lightning strikes in Lost Creek?

Below are some pics from a tree that was blown apart mid way up Lost Creek Drive. Splinters and chunks from the tree were sent clear across the road and into adjacent yards. We had a report of another tree that was struck on the opposite side of the road.
