A Black Bear Cub was sighted in Lost Creek Village today in someone’s driveway on Crooked Stick. We don’t have an idea of the size and the Mother wasn’t seen so we don’t know if this is a juvenile just starting out on their own or perhaps the Mother was nearby. (The photo below is just an example)

Its exciting to see a large predator around our area. Nonetheless, it might be a good idea to speak to your children and tell them to never approach a bear cub, no matter how cute they might be. Mommy bear might feel threatened or fear her cub is in danger. The results could be very bad.

Kids should tell Mom or Dad or the closest adult that there is a bear nearby.

We have some exciting developments lately that eveyone should know about. We are so close to making the park a reality this summer or fall; thanks to the help of lots of different people within HRM, other community groups, local organizations and volunteers within our own group.

We’re excited and happy to announce that with the help of Councillor Barry Dalrymple and a few other folks at HRM, our park has been included and approved in this year’s capital budget for HRM for the amount of $50,000.

Further to this, we’ve recieved several thousand dollars from the Councillor over the last couple of years. Last fall we had a donation from the developers of Lost Creek Village (Larry Gumbley + family and Keith Barrett) in the amount of $2000.00.

Home Depot has also given us funding thru their Home Depot Canada Foundation for $5000.00.

So with the contributions above, and with our own association’s fundraisers; we have over $18,000.00 in the bank. This money is held at a local bank under the care and trust of  the Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Awarness Awarness Association.

And as most of you are aware, our area rate was approved by council last November. This will enable HRM to ‘lend’ us an additional $50,000 to get the park built asap. This will be paid off over the next several years from our area rate (see post below for additioanl info on the area rate).

Just this past week, we learned we are going to be funded in the amount of $5,000.00 from the Cobequid Community Development Fund.

All we need is for one other big funding application to come thru. We have applied to the Province of Nova Scotia for $60,000 from the Recreation Facility Development  (RFD) Program. Hopefully we’ll hear on this one soon and we’ll start to see some action in the next few months.

UPDATE  – JUNE 7, 2011…More excellent news…HRM/Lost Creek Community Association approved for grant of $50,000.00 from the Government of Nova Scotia‘s Recreation Facility Development (RFD) Grant Program.

This round outs the funding for phase 1 of our park and its going to be great. We should see some development there this summer. Stay tuned for updates and info on an upcoming meeting of the association this summer.

Everyone certainly heard the severe storm we had Wednesday, June 1, but did you hear that we had multiple lightning strikes in Lost Creek?

Below are some pics from a tree that was blown apart mid way up Lost Creek Drive. Splinters and chunks from the tree were sent clear across the road and into adjacent yards. We had a report of another tree that was struck on the opposite side of the road.

Did you witness any damage from the storm? Was your dog or cat upset? Please share your comments or stories.

We’ve had some emails about a disgusting trend in our community. There is even a post about this on our forum. We’ve all likely seen it ourselves if you walk our streets.

There is a lot of dog poop on the shoulders of our streets. Please pick up your dogs poop!!

Its not hard. Its requires a little common courtesy. Its respecting your own neighborhood, your neighbors and yourselves.

So please have the decency to scoop up your pets poop. Ask your neighbors if they’ve seen this post. Ask them what they do. If your out and about, carry an extra bag or two, offer it up to someone who might have forgotten a bag on their walk. Its the friendly thing to do.

This winter is beginning to drag on. But the days are getting longer and thats always nice to see this time of year.

Will you and your family be heading South this winter or spring? Already had your caribbean getaway?? Complete our new poll.

We’ve had sighting of a group of 3 coyotes on Laurel Ridge. This may have been an adult with two juvenile from last years litter.

We’ve had other reports of sightings, mostly at night, both on Laurel Ridge and Lost Creek Drive. Although the coyotes in our area seem to be ‘normal’ wild animals and seemingly have no behavioral issues, we should keep in mind that we are sharing their habitat with them. In fact, if you think about it, our subdivision was built within their home.

That being said, be cautious of letting pets out alone and keep a close eye on children when they’re outside. You can visit these government webpages to read more about coyotes.

In the meantime, let us know what sort of wildlife you’ve seen around Lost Creek by completing our poll below.

We had a decent turnout at the Funny Fundraiser and made a little over $500.00. Everyone who attended had a fun time. The comedians delivered some excellent and original material. There were actually several more comedians performing than scheduled, so there was a whole lot of variety.

The silent auction went well. There were some really great items to be snagged. One item in particular drew a lot of attention. An original photo on canvas supplied by edboulterphotography.ca. The mount featured an original photo of the lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove just before it was restored last year, giving the piece a rustic and ancient look.

We’d like to thank all the other sponsors who donated items to include in our silent auction. Your support is greatly appreciated. We’d like to acknowledge the support and contributions of Councillor Barry Dalrymple who has committed another $5,000.00 towards our park for 2011.

Further to this, the developers of the subdivision have recently given a generous donation toward our goal in the amount of $2,000.00. Larry Gumbley and Keith Barrett attended our Area Rate meeting to make the presentation. This gift is greatly appreciated by our executive and the residents of Lost Creek and surrounding areas.

That should conclude our fundraisers until the spring/summer season. Next up will be our Golf Raffle. This prize will likely be 4 green fees for 1 round of golf with power carts at Lost Creek Golf Course. This prize will be generously supplied by the Golf Course here in Lost Creek as they have done the last 2 years!!

One final note of thanks goes to Maureen Sturgeon and Trina Roach who have both worked tirelessly on our recent fundraisers. We simply would not be where we are without the commitment and time of these two extraordinary ladies.

Our Funny Fundraiser is on for Saturday, January 22nd, 2011, at Brewsters in Bedford!!

Tickets will be available at the door!!!

Its sounding like this is going to be an awesome evening. The comedy show starts at 9pm and from what we’ve heard from other groups, its a great show – tons of laughs. We’ll also have a silent auction with some really excellent prizes. Door prizes are in the works as well. So please keep the date in mind, please try and come out to support the group and the park fund – the more we raise the more money our community will get back. Tell your friends and family about it, lets try and fill the place up!

The comedians performing at our comedy show are:
Marc Sauve
Carey Lee
Mark Sawatzky

Brewsters has a great atmosphere and there is fine pub fare to be had so join us a bit early for a hearty meal. Don’t forget, its January 22nd, well after the holidays and just in time to break up that January Doledrums!!

As some of you are aware, we’ve had polls and discussion about what we might want in the park. If you’ve attened any of the meetings the last couple of years, we’ve asked for suggestions and recieved lots of comments on what people would suggest or want.

As some of you are aware, Councillor Barry Dalrymple and HRM staff will be doing the necessary work to request our park be funded next year in the HRM budget.

So as we move forward and the reality of having a park/playground comes closer, its your chance to make some suggestions again. Please make your suggestions or post your comments below on anything you feel is relevant to the positive planning and fabrication of the park. All comments and suggestions will be read, added to the file for the park planning process, and presented to HRM staff.

Any questions can be directed to lostcreekpark@gmail.com
